![]() Does Canada have a national poet laureate?
Yes, Federal legislators created the position of Parliamentary Poet Laureate in 2001. Poetry has nothing to do with poetry.
Poetry is how the air goes green before thunder,
is the sound you make when you come, and
why you live and how you bleed, and the sound you make or don't make when you die.

Kristan Anderson![]()
Poet Laureate of Owen Sound, Ontario
Originally born in Owen Sound, Kristan Anderson, moved back to the place of his birth with his family three years ago from Vancouver Island. In an attempt to connect with his renewed community, Kristan began performing spoken word pieces for the first time at various venues in Owen Sound and surrounding areas. He quickly became connected to various individuals within the artistic community and began working with the Words Aloud Festival as the “Poetry Slam” coordinator from 2007 till present. Kristan has worked with the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library on many of their youth coffee houses and is one of the founding members of “SOUNDS”, a monthly words and music series. Though relatively new to Spoken Word, Kristan’s blended passion for performance and working with youth has culminated in his recent appointment as Poet Laureate for Owen Sound. As both a youth worker and teacher, Kristan sees youth as an often marginalized group whose voices are too often unheard or ignored. Kristan’s goal during his two-year term as poet laureate is to work with youth in developing their ability to use spoken word and poetry in general as a means of self-expression and to help create a sustainable scene for spoken word within the community as well.
