What is the role of a poet laureate?

Generally, a poet laureate’s main role is to serve as a literary ambassador, an advocate for poetry, language and the arts. A few are required to write poems for special occasions, but that is not the general rule. Rather the poet is supposed to concentrate on their own work and share that with their community. Often a poet laureate will create a legacy project during their term.

First Parliamentary Poet Laureate
  2002 - 2004

In 2006 George Bowering was involved with the Chapbook Project. He wrote 12 Chapbooks, each with its own constraints. He wrote one poem a day for 365 days. As of May, 2008, 11 of the 12 have been published by chapbook publishers in BC, Alberta and Ontario. 2006 was also the year in which the clothbound edition of Vermeer's Light  was published. This collection of poems 1996-2006 was reprinted in 2007 in paperback, by Talonbooks.
