Since I've started learning the language [English] I've noticed how many people don't listen to each other. They automatically adopt a sort of 'condom language' as their protection .

Alice Major

Alice Major

Edmonton, Alberta Poet Laureate
  2005 - 2007

Alice Major was named Edmonton’s first poet laureate in 2005, after moving to the city in 1981. She was born in Scotland and grew up in Toronto.

Her eighth collection of poetry, The Office Tower Tales, is being published in spring 2008, by the University of Alberta Press. The UAP also published her last collection, The Occupied World, in 2006. Both books are very much focused on her home city – its geology, history and mythology.

Her books have been shortlisted for a number of important prizes, including the Pat Lowther award (best book of poetry by a Canadian woman); the City of Edmonton Book Prize; and the Stephan G. Stephanson award (best poetry book of the year, presented by the Writers Guild of Alberta). She has won the Malahat Review’s long poem contest, among other awards.

Alice has served as president of the League of Canadian Poets and the Writers Guild of Alberta, and as chair of the Edmonton Arts Council. She completed her term as Edmonton’s poet laureate in June, 2007
