Who funds poet laureate appointments?

Usually the municipality or province will sponsor the position. Owen Sound’s laureate is the only one funded by members of the business community, rather than tax payers. Cobalt’s poet laureate is funded by several generous cultural entrepreneurs.

Douglas Lochhead

Poet Laureate of Sackville, New Brunswick

Born in Guelph, Ontario, Douglas Lochhead is a long time resident of Sackville, New Brunswick and, since 2002, the Town’s Poet Laureate. He was recently appointed as Sackville Poet laureate for life. He is the author of over twenty published collections of his poetry. He was, until his retirement, the Director of Canadian Studies and is currently professor emeritus at Mount Allison University in Sackville.
